OUR STORY

PT Sumatera Tropical Spices is a join venture company of McCormick & Co., Incorporated and Dani Prisma Mitra Group. We are located in West Sumatera which is the largest and best producer of cinnamon in Indonesia. Founded in 1992 and was inaugurated in 1993 by the Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives and the Head of Bulog, Mr. Bustanil Arifin who is also the founder of this company.

PT Sumatra Tropical Spices was officially inaugurated by Mr. Bustanil Arifin, the Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives and Head of Bulog, who also serves as the founder of our company.

Our company is an integral part of PT. Dani Prisma Mitra, a distinguished holding and investment firm with diverse business units encompassing Property, Livestock, Plantation, Dairy Products, Tourism, Health SPA, Hotels, and Resorts. These ventures are strategically situated across various regions in Indonesia.

Founder

PT Sumatera Tropical Spices embarked on its inaugural export venture in 1993, under the visionary leadership of its founder, Letjen (Purn) Bustanil Arifin. Born in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on October 10, 1925, Mr. Arifin was a distinguished Indonesian politician and a retired member of the Indonesian National Army. His illustrious career included roles as the Head of the Logistics Affairs Agency (Bulog) and the Minister of Cooperatives in the Development Cabinet V.

Mr. Arifin completed his early education at HIS (1940) and MULO (1942) in Medan. His commitment to public service led to his appointment as the Indonesian Consul General in New York, USA, in 1972, prior to assuming leadership positions as the Minister of Cooperatives and the Head of the Logistics Affairs Agency. Under his astute leadership, Indonesia achieved self-sufficiency in food production, a remarkable accomplishment recognized and awarded by the FAO (World Food and Agriculture Organization) in 1985.

Driven by his deep connection to West Sumatra, Mr. Arifin initiated the establishment of our company in his hometown. He began this endeavor by securing investments from American partner McCormick & Co., Incorporated, in addition to three other shareholders. Bustanil Arifin passed away on February 13, 2011, at the age of 85, at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, United States. His enduring legacy continues to inspire our commitment to excellence.

Mr. Bambang's journey with PT. Sumatera Tropical Spices began at the company's very inception, where he took on the pivotal role of Director in 1993. Throughout his illustrious tenure, his visionary leadership played a pivotal role in propelling the organization to new heights. Under his stewardship, PT. Sumatera Tropical Spices transformed into a globally renowned spice processing enterprise, earning distinction as one of the foremost names in the industry.

Over the course of his 23-year tenure at the helm, Mr. Bambang oversaw the company's evolution into an international powerhouse, meticulously crafting its reputation for uncompromising quality and exceptional service. This unwavering commitment to excellence not only solidified the company's position as a preferred choice among discerning clients but also fostered an extensive global reach.

PT. Sumatera Tropical Spices, under Mr. Bambang's guidance, became synonymous with top-tier spice distribution worldwide, with a particularly strong presence in the United States and Europe. His strategic acumen, dedication, and profound knowledge of the spice industry allowed the company to flourish and thrive on the global stage, making it a trusted source for premium spices.

Through his tireless efforts and leadership, Mr. Bambang has left an indelible mark on PT. Sumatera Tropical Spices, shaping it into the successful, internationally acclaimed enterprise it is today.

Denny S Arfans

Mr. Denny assumed the role of Director at PT Sumatera Tropical Spices from December 2016 to January 2022, leaving an indelible mark on the company during his tenure. An accomplished alumnus of the Bandung Institute of Technology, he graduated with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, showcasing his commitment to excellence in academia.

Before his directorship, Mr. Denny served as the Operational Director, overseeing the production of stick and broken cinnamon, a role he held with distinction from October 2013 to November 2016. His dedication to streamlining processes and ensuring product quality significantly contributed to the company's success in the spice industry.

Prior to joining PT Sumatera Tropical Spices, Mr. Denny held the position of Senior Manager at PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk. for an impressive tenure spanning from October 2000 to October 2013. His experience in the banking sector endowed him with a deep understanding of financial management and operational efficiency, which he skillfully applied to his roles within the organization.

Throughout his professional journey, Mr. Denny's dedication, expertise, and strategic insights have been invaluable assets to the companies he has served. His tenure at PT Sumatera Tropical Spices reflects his commitment to excellence and his ability to contribute meaningfully to the growth and success of the organizations he has been a part of.

Present Leadership

Andika Heru Wardhana

Mr. Heru has been entrusted with the role of Director at PT Sumatera Tropical Spices since February 2022, and his tenure in this capacity continues to date. He brings with him a distinguished academic background, having earned a Master's Degree in Accounting with a specialization in Cost Accounting from Trisakti University in Jakarta.

His professional journey has been marked by a wealth of experience garnered from various esteemed business organizations. At PT Bakrie Toll Road, he assumed critical leadership roles as the Head of the Budget and Cost Control Department and later as the Head of the Revenue Assurance Department. In these capacities, he made significant contributions to financial management and operational excellence.

Mr. Heru's career also encompasses pivotal positions at PT Gapura Angkasa Airport Services, where he served as the Accounting Department Head at Ngurah Rai Airport in BALI, and as an Accounting Officer at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. These roles further honed his financial acumen and operational expertise.

Under his current leadership at PT Sumatera Tropical Spices, Mr. Heru has embarked on an ambitious agenda. His focus includes the development of new markets, the enhancement and refinement of business operations, the advancement of human resources capabilities, and the pursuit of FSSC 22000 certification to ensure the highest standards of food safety. Moreover, his innovative approach is evident in successful collaborations with external partners for the development of processed cinnamon products, such as cinnamon tea, cinnamon coffee, and more. Mr. Heru's comprehensive leadership style and commitment to innovation position him as a valuable asset to PT Sumatera Tropical Spices, facilitating the company's continued growth and diversification in the market.
